5.0 out of 5 stars Y do so many misunderstand what MegaPixel is???, August 27, 2011

This is an excellent Camera. It turns on and is ready to shoot in about a second. And if you change the default image size from the huge 16 megapixel to something more commonly used in the real world (and you have a fairly fast SD card), you can be ready for the next picture in less then a second.

It's sad to see so many people fail to understand this, and I'd say shame on Canon for not making this clear in their "start up" documentation. Even the CNET review pointed out it was slow writing a 16 meg file to the card (as would be expected), and my belief is CNET said that to chide Canon for not making it clear the setting should be changed to "what's appropriate for your picture needs".

Most people are not making Poster Sized Prints! And because of that, creating 16 megapixel images is a total waste of hard drive (and flash SD card) space, not to mention the time one has to wait for it to write it to the flash card (as so many have complained about)... Read more

2.0 out of 5 stars WARNING: Image Distortion Occurs with this Model (and no one is talking about it)!!, May 28, 2011
By
Kimmylikins (Westchester, NY) - See all my reviews
As an owner of multiple Canon camera's in my lifetime, including my current 7.1 mp "Powershot SD750 Elf" and 16 mp "Rebel T2i" DSLR, I really put confidence in Canon's products. Or, I did. Now I am just frustrated and at a loss for where to go from here.

First you should know that while I am not a professional photographer, I am far from a beginner and am pretty adept with technology. I purchased the "Canon Powershot A3300 IS" as a replacement for my now outdated and thoroughly used 7.1 mp Elf. I was beyond excited when it arrived and beyond disappointed after using it. Half of my images came out with a barrel-type distortion at the upper edge. This occurred mainly in close-up images that filled the frame, but also in a shot that was composed at about a 6 or 7 ft distance of three children. The two children squatting down were perfectly centered and look beautiful; but the child standing behind them who was just above the center of the frame, ended up with an elongated lump... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Canon Powershot A3300 IS, March 16, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Canon Powershot A3300 16 MP Digital Camera with 5x Optical Zoom (Black) (Electronics)
The Canon PowerShot A3300 IS is small enough and nicely fits into your pocket. Being 16 Megapixels and tons of shooting modes your going to need to browse the manual a few times to learn all it's features if you want to get some amazing pictures from it. The A3300 does have an Auto mode and bonus Easy Mode setting on the dial. In easy mode only a couple settings work and gives brief instructions on how it works, such as the shutter and zoom, otherwise the camera decides everything else for you. It also has a scene mode and special effects mode with allow for some creative shooting such as Fisheye lens, miniature, toy camera, etc. The camera feels very well built in your hands and the only down fall I found so far is that the flash is at the very top right hand corner and you can have a finger in the way of the flash if your not careful... 5.0 out of 5 stars A510 vs A520 vs SDxxx, April 18, 2005
This review is from: Canon Powershot A520 4MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Zoom (Electronics)
Let me begin by saying that Canon makes exceptional digital cameras; the best in the market right now. This is because they have always used high quality components since they began manufacturing digital cameras. This one is no exception.

The Axxx series is the successor to the excellent Axx series, with a few very useful upgrades, such as the switch from 4AA to 2AA batteries (with no decrease in camera life!), and the 4x optical zoom.

A510 vs A520 vs SDxxx

First off, the A510 and A520 are identical except for the 3.2 megapixel sensor in the A510 and 4mp on the A520. Today, megapixel ratings are similar to Ghz ratings in the computer world: They used to mean a lot, but with today's cameras, it doesn't mean that much anymore. More megapixels do NOT mean a better image. They mean a larger printable image. In this case, the A510 has a maximum resolution of 2048x1536 pixels, or an 8.5x11 picture. The A520 has a max resolution of 2272x1704 pixels, or a... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Best selling digital camera series!, March 14, 2005
This review is from: Canon Powershot A520 4MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Zoom (Electronics)
Canon has fully redesigned the Powershot A series to make it lighter (uses only 2 AA batteries now), smaller and with 4x optical zoom.

Pro's,

1. Very good image quality.

2. 4 MP and 4x optical zoom (A510, the 3.2MP version should be fine for most though).

3. Priced right, unlike some overpriced digicams out there.

4. Works on 2 normal AA batteries (buy rechargeable ones for extra life and lower cost), unlike expensive & hard-to-find propreitary batteries.

5. The menu on the Canon cameras is light years ahead of most other manufacturer's. Lots of manual options and scene modes.

6. Battery and SD card doors seem to be of above average quality.

7. 1.8" LCD screen is bright and fluid.

8. Uses standard SD cards, unlike propretary memory cards like Memory Stick or xD card.

9. Can attach extra lenses if one buys the adaptor for it.

10. Actual LCD screen looks nicely... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars PowerShot A520 vs. PowerShot A95 vs. Other Cameras, August 22, 2005
This review is from: Canon Powershot A520 4MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Zoom (Electronics)
First of all, let me explain to you why I narrowed it down to two Canon digital Cameras. After extensive research on the net looking at prices and reviews, I really thought that their wasn't a camera for me, one that I would be happy with. Most Digital cameras on the market, for consumers, are these really small things that are fully automatic and have limited capabilities. And to add the to the previous statement, really really expensive. Olympus offered some nice cameras with 10x Zoom lens, at a reasonable price, but if you look deeper you'll find that it uses these tiny rechargable batteries. Two reasons why I do not like those, the main reason is cost. They cost a bit and you cant do with just one, you have to atleast buy several. Another reason, (which is quite big) is that if you somewhere were you're not going to get access to a power source then you're screwed when you run out of batteries.

O.k. so I finally got two decent cameras that fit basically my needs, and... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Camera Of Its Type - Like The Wide Angle, March 12, 2011
By
Chicagoan (Chicago, IL United States) - See all my reviews
The Canon A1200 has the features which we value most and as such, is our favorite digital camera. In particular,

* It can take wide angle photos - the equivalent of 28mm on the older film SLR's
* It uses 2 AA batteries which is great - especially when traveling overseas. In the past, we encountered too many occasions when a battery became exhausted in the middle of the day or could not be recharged at night. This was especially true when traveling overseas. So now we only consider cameras which use AA batteries because they can be purchased almost anywhere.
* It takes HD video.
* Its size is compact and can easily fit in a pocket or purse. Years ago, I enjoyed taking photos with SLR's and wore out 3 of them (the film versions). However, I missed many shots on vacation because I did not want to carry an SLR everywhere I went. The compact size of the A1200 allows us to carry it everywhere with ease. And it takes high quality photos.
* This camera... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for close-up nature photography, April 26, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Canon Powershot A1200 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 4x Optical Zoom (Silver) (Camera)
Like it's Powershot siblings, the Canon A1200 is a heck of a nice piece of equipment for shooting nature close-ups. I've taken this camera out twice now, and so far it has taken wonderful photos. I've posted some samples from a single hike.

Although the A1200 can't squeeze in on a subject as closely as the A480 (one of my all-time favorite cameras), this new Canon camera is capable of focusing just an inch and a half away from the subject in "Macro" mode. I usually carry one or two Pentax DLSR cameras as I hike through miles of woodland trails every weekend, and although they're great cameras, they simply can't beat Canon Powershots for capturing the tiniest nature subjects, in my opinion. If a subject is smaller than a quarter, out come the Powershots.

This camera takes photos that easily match or beat the quality of images you'll find in typical nature guides by Peterson or Simon & Schuster. Spend a year on the trail with it, and you could easily have a full... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent camera for the price, April 12, 2011
I bought the Canon A1200 because I wanted a small point and shoot that I could take everywhere with me. Other selling points were the optical viewfinder which I don't really use much, as well as the AA batteries. I use Sanyo Eneloops in this camera and they work great. I don't know how many pictures I can take with them on a single charge because I end up recharging them before they die completely.

The biggest surprise for me has been how well this camera does in low lighting. I have sometimes had trouble with getting good exposures in the dim lighting in my house but not with this camera. The sensor seems to be tuned for low light performance and it is a consistent performer for birthday parties or just taking snapshots of my kids.

I uploaded a few of the artistic shots I've made with this camera and I can say that the A1200 has exceeded all of my expectations for a point and shoot camera at this price range. It is a great performer and with a little effort it... Read more
